2009

Wow 2009 is here and well and truly underway. I have been very poor at keeping his up to date. But maybe this year maybe different. One thing I have already found from this year, is that sometimes its hard to work on a class of kids and then work from the start with the new group. Really does push the patience sometimes. But last year was a learning curve.

For a star this year, having the kids sent up independent email addresses solely for school use will be a must. Having the kids give me their information (password and email address) will make it easier for those who seem to not remember there details. So hopefully their own blogs will be more up to date, as they won’t have to keep starting from scratch.

I have also had some ideas published in the recent Interface magazine, How exciting. It was just a blurb I wrote to the editor last year, but he stuck it in anyway. There is a really interesting article on making your own interactive whiteboards/tablets, which seems very very cool, and I soooo want to give it a go. The you tube link is great.

I’m taking art this year (year 7/8) so will be doing some digital work with the computers, I have already purchased art rage, which i think is brilliant (only $1 per copy for schools). so might have some things to add on that later.

SO that’s it, please check back to see if I am keeping updated, and If I don’t please tell me.

3. Describing the characters around you
Fiction sometimes plays a role in descriptive writing. As you describe an event, you may observe someone who is unfamiliar but whom you want to write about. In order to describe this person, you will need to use your imagination. For example, if you see someone with paint on her shirt, you may decide that she is an artist. You can then build a whole story — or journal entry — starting from this single detail. Observe a person you don’t know but who seems interesting to you. Pick one detail about that person that you find interesting. Then write a short description of this person based on that detail. Be as creative as you can.

Part 2 exercise -

2. Observe and describe your world.
Think and write about an event — for example, a birthday party, a trip to the zoo, or a ride on the school bus. As the event unfolds, concentrate on what happens not only to you but around you. Record in your memory the details of what you experience. Here are some questions to ask yourself:

What do you see?
What can you hear — voices? music?
What can you smell?
What do you taste?
How does the place feel — temperature, textures, etc.?
How do you feel — excited? scared? happy? sad?
What are you thinking?

Jouranl Entries part I

As part of writing this term we are looking at jouranl writing to enhance our writing skills. this comes from writing with writers: http://teacher.scholastic.com/writewit/diary/descriptive_description.htm

The first task is to list 10 qualities that best describes themselves.

1. Who are you?
Make a list of all the qualities that describe who you are. For example: Are you a student? a musician? an athlete? Are you friendly? outgoing? serious? happy? Come up with a list of five to ten qualities. Understanding who you are will make it easier for you to describe yourself in your journal entry.

Descriptive Langugae

We are just completing a desciptive lanugage exercise, involving the class completing an interesting introduction.

Learning Intention:

To create and interesting introduciton for an adventure story.

Success Criteria (from the Children):

Use describing words

not just all similes

adverbs, adjectives, etc…

Good use of language features

NB: not marking for spelling, but do attempt to punctuate and spell.

Visit the kids sites to see their examples.

Term 2

The first week of term 2 is nearing an end. It has been a week to settle back into routine and get off to a fresh start. It in the classroom is still a continual process, I have just installed a computer management system (free) onto the 25 PCs. This enables me to monitor, record, demo, assist, chat with users on all or groups of or single pcs. It also has a lock anility to focus attention, as well as remote access, and the ability to log off users and turn off all the Pcs in one go. Its still a work in process and I’m still working through issues with it, but it looks good. similar to Net Op… its called iTalc.

Blog Points

The class is now working very hard on their blogs. We have implemented a system involiving the children keeoing track of each other. In the classroom we have a checklist of portfolio activities, that the children mark off when they have seen someone elses.

One of the main points for focus now is making sure categoories are set up correctly. These can be managed in the manage tab under categories. Next term we sill set up categories for the terms work.

We have now had a number of weeks “playing” with blog. Next term is time to shift it into a working “E-Portfolio” – step 1 encourage children to call it their portfolio not their Blog.

Haiku

The children should now be working on publishing their process involving haiku and uploading their samples. We worked on syllables and format. With some children we spoke about eliminating words that weren’t needed to generate more interesting Haiku. All children in the class successfully completed the task.
